Just as the Mississippi
divides the country vertically, another line, imaginary but no less
important, divides it horizontally. It's the Insurance line. North of
it people say in-SUR-ance. South of it they say IN-surance. On each
side of the line, people are made incredulous and anxious by the way
people on the other side pronounce the word. The Insurance Line marks
a division as sharp as nationality or even gender, and the point at
which it crosses the Mississippi has got to throb with special meaning.
Any
documentary about the Mississippi should take note of this remarkable
intersection.
